1907 Auf dem Moos, Riedern, Diemtigen, Bern

Robert Kunz was born in this house "auf dem Moos" in the hamlet of Riedern in Diemtigen valley. The photograph was taken by Ezra Louie Kunz (1887-1985), son of David Kunz and his first wife, Louise Maria Jakob, approximately 1907/1908, during his "Mormon" mission in Switzerland while traveling with two of his cousins -- Joseph Kunz (1875-1978), son of Samuel Kunz and his first wife, Elizabeth Hanni Kunz, on the far left; and Seth Noah Kunz (1885-1973), son of Christian Kunz and his second wife, Caroline Buhler Kunz, on the far right -- who were also serving as missionaries in the Swiss German Mission. The old house in the picture shows a back view of the homestead "auf dem Moos." About 1847, John Kunz II and Rosina Knutti Kunz moved from Zwischenflueh to Riedern with their three oldest children; the eight younger children in the family were born in this home (including Samuel Kunz, the father of missioanry Joseph in the picture; and David Kunz, the father of the photographer). It was in this house that "Mormon" missionary Willard Brigham Richards (1847-1942) taught John Kunz II and his family the principles of "Mormonism" and converted them. It is from here that they immigrated to Utah in early July 1870. The woman standing between the missionary Kunz cousins is presumably Mrs. Schwarz, whose husband owned the house at the beginning of the 20th century. The boy at her side is probably her son (or possibly even a grandson).
